Royal Baby Announcement

Parents Christo and Dora Red-tail are pleased to announce the birth of their three yet-to-be-named-and-yet-to-be-gender-determined hawklets. The babies arrived some time between May 1st and May 3rd. Christo and Dora are overjoyed with their very dominant one, their runt, and the middle one too.

Registered at: Bird, Bath & Beyond, Bird-dorf Goodman, and Tiffany’s.

Some items on the registry include: Rat, rat, rat, pigeon, brown rat, large rat, small rat, and twigs.

Baby hawk’s first meal!

This is Dora feeding the first eyass.  We have not seen the wee one yet, but Dora is clearly ripping off pieces of raw meat and feeding them to her babe in the back of the nest.  Can’t wait to get a peep!

Roses are red,

violets are blue,

this rat tartare

is just for you.

It’s been hard to get a shot of Dora and Christo together lately. Dora’s been endlessly vigilant on the nest while Christo is out and about. The only interactions they’ve had have been quick swap outs for egg incubation and snack drop-off. Christo also has been keeping another raptor at bay today.

Amazing! 180 degree head rotation. Take that, owls!

A hawk beak and talons. It’s what I have to work with. Don’t judge.

The large eyes of a raptor are positioned on the front of the face, affording binocular vision and excellent depth perception. If our eyes were as large in proportion to our bodies as the eyes of a Red-tailed Hawk, they would be about the size of tennis balls.  – From Red-tailed Hawk by Charles R. Preston
